The Walnut Creek City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday to approve a $720,000 rehabilitation contract for the Robert I. Schroder pedestrian and bicycle overcrossing spanning Treat Boulevard near Jones Road. Convening at City Hall on North Main Street in Walnut Creek, council members, city engineers, and regional trail advocates approved funding for anti-slip deck resurfacing, architectural cable safety railing repairs, and the installation of energy-efficient LED path lighting along the iconic cable-stayed bridge.

Constructed to provide seamless grade-separated passage over busy Treat Boulevard, the overcrossing serves as a vital arterial link for thousands of daily cyclists, runners, and commuters connecting between the Contra Costa Centre BART station, nearby residential transit villages, and the regional Iron Horse Trail. City public works inspectors reported that the bridge deck has experienced normal surface wear and coating weathering, requiring a modern waterproof epoxy polymer overlay to preserve structural integrity and prevent moisture intrusion.

Transportation advocates and local bicycle coalitions praised the council's investment, noting that upgraded LED lighting fixtures will significantly improve nighttime visibility and personal security for evening transit riders returning home from San Francisco and Oakland. Public works staff confirmed that temporary pedestrian detour routes will be clearly marked along adjacent sidewalk ramps during short intermittent deck pouring closures, ensuring that cyclists can safely bypass active work zones.

Walnut Creek residents, commuters, and active transit users can review structural engineering reports, detour maps, and construction milestone schedules online at walnut-creek.org/publicworks. Inquiries regarding trail maintenance, city bicycle infrastructure plans, and council agendas may be directed to the Walnut Creek Public Works Department Monday through Friday at (925) 943-5854. Field construction will commence next month.
