Clayton and State Park Rangers Complete Perimeter Wildfire Fuel Clearance Along Mount Diablo Trailheads
Coordinated defensible space operation removes dry brush and restores pedestrian access from Clayton Community Park into state parklands.

Maintenance crews from the City of Clayton joined forces with California State Parks rangers on Wednesday to complete an extensive wildfire fuels reduction and trail maintenance operation bordering Mount Diablo State Park. Gathering at the Clayton Community Park trailhead along Marsh Creek Road and Regency Drive, field technicians and conservation hand crews eliminated dense stands of non-native dry brush, thinned deadwood chaparral, and cleared overgrown hillside ravines that abut residential neighborhoods in southeastern Contra Costa County.
Emergency services officials from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District monitored the fuels clearance, emphasizing that establishing thirty feet of defensible space along public open space boundaries is critical for mitigating fire spread during autumn dry-wind conditions. Crews operated mechanical mowers, brush trimmers, and woodchippers along a two-mile perimeter buffer zone, clearing accumulated brush piles and reopening scenic hiking trails connecting Clayton to the upper peaks of Mount Diablo.
Clayton civic leaders and park administrators praised the multi-agency collaboration, noting that the project also restored degraded trail drainage culverts to prevent winter mudslides and trail rutting during incoming Pacific storms. Park rangers installed updated interpretive trail signage displaying topographic hiking routes, fire danger warning levels, and wildlife protection guidelines to assist thousands of seasonal outdoor enthusiasts who visit the park each autumn.
Clayton homeowners, outdoor hikers, and equestrian trail riders can access comprehensive defensible space maps, park regulations, and state park trail condition updates online at claytonca.gov/parks. Questions regarding municipal open space maintenance and community fire safe programs may be directed to the Clayton City Hall maintenance division Monday through Friday at (925) 673-7300.
