Contra Costa Clerk Kristin Connelly Deploys Security at 150 Polling Sites After DHS Visit

As reported by KALW 91.7, Contra Costa County Clerk-Recorder and Registrar of Voters Kristin Connelly hired private security guards for the county's Elections Headquarters in Martinez and for all 150 polling places operating on Election Day:

  • Armed DHS Visit Over 407 Voter Records: Connelly took the step after armed Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officers arrived unannounced at the Martinez elections office last week and demanded that the county invalidate 407 voter registration records within 48 hours. Roughly 2 dozen other California county elections offices received similar visits targeting approximately 20,000 voter records statewide.
  • Federal Injunction Protects Voters & Election Workers: Connelly referred the DHS demand to the California Secretary of State and the California Department of Justice, which obtained a weekend federal court order from U.S. District Judge David O. Carter blocking the removal of the 20,000 disputed records—a ruling left intact Monday evening by the U.S. Supreme Court. Connelly emphasized that state and federal laws strictly prohibit voter intimidation or firearms inside or near polling places.

Professor Sara Toruno-Conley and Liberal Arts Dean Dennis Franco credited faculty collaboration and embedded tutoring at the Center for Academic Support for boosting first-year transfer-level completion rates.
