San Francisco District 5 Supervisor Bilal Mahmood has unveiled the Grocery Affordability Initiative, a privately funded 1-year pilot program designed to let 600 low-income residents in the Tenderloin, Fillmore, Western Addition, and Haight-Ashbury purchase fresh produce and staple groceries at wholesale prices through neighborhood bulk-buying hubs (Hoodline).
According to KQED, a San Francisco-based philanthropic organization has committed initial funding for the pilot, which is expected to begin operating by mid-2027. Participating residents will place orders online or in person and pick up groceries at partnering community centers. The initiative follows the closure of the Fillmore Safeway store early last year and federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) reductions under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act signed in July 2025. According to the San Francisco Human Services Agency, roughly 113,000 San Franciscans rely on CalFresh benefits, and 5,800 residents lost food assistance in earlier eligibility changes this year, with new work rules taking effect Nov. 1 and additional cuts scheduled through 2028.
San Francisco Startup Fragment Exits Stealth With $56 Million
In the city's enterprise technology sector, San Francisco-based procurement startup Fragment emerged from stealth mode with $56 million in total funding, CEO Pranav Mulgund told Axios (Hoodline). Founded in 2025, Fragment raised a Series A round led by 8VC following a seed round co-led by General Catalyst and A*, with former Sequoia steward Roelof Botha also participating as an investor and Naveen Kashyap serving as chief technology officer.
Fragment builds AI agents and an Autonomous Context Engine designed to connect to manufacturers' existing enterprise resource planning (ERP) and procurement systems without data migration. In company materials citing deployment with electronics manufacturer Flex, Fragment claims its platform resolves more than 90% of direct procurement and payment exceptions without human intervention and serves dozens of Fortune 1000 enterprises with more than $1 billion in annual revenue.
