Pittsburg Planning Commission Approves Development Extension for Industrial Clean-Energy Storage Facility
City commissioners grant 24-month timeline extension for 200-megawatt battery energy storage project near industrial waterfront corridor.

The Pittsburg Planning Commission voted on Tuesday evening to approve a two-year development permit extension for a major 200-megawatt grid-scale battery energy storage project situated in the city's eastern industrial corridor. Convening at Pittsburg City Hall on Civic Avenue, commissioners evaluated technical grid interconnection timelines and updated fire-suppression safeguards before granting the developer additional runway to complete regional power utility agreements.
The energy facility, slated for construction on an 18-acre brownfield parcel formerly utilized for heavy industrial fabrication, will deploy lithium-iron-phosphate battery enclosures capable of supplying four hours of clean electricity to Northern California's electric grid during peak demand windows. Project engineers stated that the extension was necessitated by regional supply-chain adjustments for high-voltage substation transformers and prolonged Cal-ISO interconnection queue engineering studies. Project developers highlighted that the energy storage facility will enhance Northern California grid stability while reducing reliance on fossil-fuel peaker plants in East Contra Costa County.
Commission members emphasized that the clean-energy development aligns with Contra Costa County's broader transition toward green industrial operations along the Carquinez Strait and Suisun Bay waterfronts. The developer committed to establishing a community benefits agreement funding local STEM vocational training programs in clean-energy engineering for high school graduates in Pittsburg, while mandating specialized hazmat training for Contra Costa County Fire Protection District personnel.
Pittsburg residents, industrial partners, and environmental policy analysts can inspect the complete conditional use permit documents, environmental mitigation plans, and commission resolutions online at pittsburgca.gov. Inquiries regarding local employment opportunities, environmental monitoring reports, and industrial planning agendas can be directed to the Pittsburg Community Development Department Monday through Friday at (925) 252-4920. Site preparation works are projected to begin in mid-2027.
