Hospital and Homebuilder Stocks Rally While Defense Contractors Slide 4% to 12% After Midterms

While the benchmark S&P 500 index rose a modest 0.2% across the post-election trading sessions, Tuesday's midterm outcome triggered pronounced divergences beneath the market surface. Hospital networks posted the strongest gains on expectations that incoming House Democrats will push to restore federal Medicaid funding and Affordable Care Act subsidies: Universal Health Services surged 10.4% on Wednesday, HCA Healthcare climbed 6.9%, and Tenet Healthcare advanced 6.2%. Housing-related equities also rallied on prospects for bipartisan supply incentives, with D.R. Horton rising 4.9%, PulteGroup gaining 4.4%, and Home Depot adding 2.9%.

Conversely, aerospace and defense stocks fell between 4% and 12% over the two days following the vote. Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics each dropped more than 10%, while Palantir Technologies declined nearly 6%, as investors concluded that a Democratic-led House is unlikely to approve President Donald Trump's earlier proposal to increase the fiscal 2027 U.S. defense budget by 50% to $1.5 trillion. Elsewhere, Tesla shares gained 2.2% over the two-day span while Trump Media & Technology Group fell 4.3%.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog Designates Gadi Eisenkot to Form Coalition After October 27 Vote

In Jerusalem, Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Saturday formally tasked former military chief of staff Gadi Eisenkot with forming a new coalition government following Israel's inconclusive October 27 parliamentary election. In the 120-seat Knesset, where 61 seats are required for a governing majority, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing bloc captured 53 seats while the opposition bloc led by Eisenkot, former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, and Yair Lapid secured 48 seats, leaving Arab political parties holding the remaining balance.

After consulting party leaders, Herzog concluded that Eisenkot had the broadest path to negotiating either a majority coalition or a national unity government. Under Israeli law, Eisenkot has an initial 28 days—with the possibility of a 2-week extension for up to 6 weeks total—to assemble a cabinet.

Kremlin Weighs U.S. Midterm Shift Ahead of Fourth Round of Trilateral Ukraine Talks in Abu Dhabi

In diplomatic developments, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated Friday that Moscow hopes the U.S. congressional midterm shift will not interrupt ongoing diplomatic channels with the Trump administration ahead of a scheduled fourth round of U.S.-brokered trilateral talks between Russia and Ukraine in Abu Dhabi. The diplomatic sessions follow the U.S. State Department's October 30 approval of a $2.1 billion sale of Patriot air-defense missile interceptors to Ukraine financed by European NATO allies.
