Michael Pollan and Neuroscientist Christof Koch Explore Consciousness in UC Berkeley Forum
Cal Performances and UC Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics release conversation moderated by Shayla Love.

Bestselling author Michael Pollan and pioneering neuroscientist Christof Koch examined the mysteries of human awareness and altered states of perception during a featured UC Berkeley campus conversation released this October on the university's Berkeley Talks podcast. Presented jointly by Cal Performances and the UC Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics near Oxford Street, the public forum was moderated by science journalist Shayla Love. The interdisciplinary dialogue blended empirical brain research, philosophy of mind, and personal reflections on how human beings experience reality.
During the discussion in Berkeley, Pollan reflected on insights from his 2026 book, "A World Appears: A Journey into Consciousness," and recounted a vivid psychedelic state in his home garden where he became convinced the surrounding plants were conscious and returning his gaze. The longtime UC Berkeley journalism professor observed that everyday consciousness normally operates like a transparent windshield that people look through without noticing. Psychedelics, Pollan noted, effectively smudge that glass, compelling observers to notice and question the mechanics of subjective awareness itself.
Koch brought more than three decades of laboratory neuroscience experience dedicated to locating the specific neural correlates and brain mechanisms that generate conscious experience. Having served for over ten years as president and chief scientist of the Allen Institute for Brain Science in Seattle, Koch currently leads research as chief scientist at the Tiny Blue Dot Foundation. He detailed how contemporary neuroimaging and clinical studies are testing competing theories of how electrical activity in the cerebral cortex transforms into felt emotion and visual perception.
Beyond clinical laboratory metrics, the speakers and academic department panel explored consciousness not merely as a scientific puzzle to solve, but as a vital human capacity to cultivate in daily life. Pollan, Koch, and Love discussed how East Bay residents can deepen awareness through non-pharmacological practices such as spending quiet time in regional parks, practicing mindfulness meditation, or simply allowing moments of unscheduled boredom away from digital screens. University faculty members noted strong student and community engagement with the center's public education program.
Readers and listeners across Contra Costa and Alameda counties can stream the full audio recording and read the complete transcript on Friday through the university news portal at news.berkeley.edu or inquire about upcoming Cal Performances speaker series events at (510) 642-9988. Additional public lectures hosted by the UC Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics are scheduled throughout October and November along Bancroft Way.
