Diablo Valley College Expands Student Basic Needs Center and Community Grocery Pantry in Pleasant Hill
Community college hub provides fresh local produce, emergency meal vouchers, and housing stabilization grants for over 2,400 students across Contra Costa County.

Diablo Valley College unveiled an expanded Student Basic Needs Center and community food pantry on Tuesday morning at its Pleasant Hill campus, substantially increasing nutritional and housing support for community college scholars navigating rising Bay Area living expenses.
Located on the ground floor of the Student Union complex on Golf Club Road, the newly renovated 2,800-square-foot facility features commercial walk-in refrigeration units, fresh farm produce bins stocked through partnerships with the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano, and confidential advising cubicles for students seeking emergency housing assistance. College district administrators noted that over 2,400 registered students utilized pantry services during the previous spring term.
The campus expansion was financed through a $450,000 California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office basic needs allocation alongside generous regional donor contributions to the DVC Foundation. Contra Costa Community College District Student Services Dean Todd Hampton pointed out that academic retention and degree completion rates rise significantly when students do not have to choose between purchasing course textbooks and putting nutritious food on the family table.
Student government representatives and peer mentors led tours of the expanded facility on Tuesday, demonstrating the center's dignity-focused market model that allows students to select organic fruits, dairy items, and staple dry goods using private electronic ID scanning. In addition to shelf-stable groceries, the department distributes monthly transit clipper passes and emergency utility micro-grants for working student parents across the district.
The Basic Needs Center is open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM for all enrolled students carrying at least three academic units at either the Pleasant Hill or San Ramon campuses. Campus organizers will host an autumn community food drive and volunteer sorting day on Saturday, October 24, inviting local residents and civic organizations to donate non-perishable pantry items. Community members interested in donating or volunteering can contact the DVC Foundation office online.
