Clayton Valley Charter High School in Concord Launches Advanced Drone Aviation and Commercial Piloting Curriculum
Innovative technical education pathway partners with industry instructors to prepare local students for federal commercial drone certifications and aerospace careers.

Clayton Valley Charter High School in Concord introduced a forward-looking Career Technical Education program on Tuesday, inaugurating an advanced commercial unmanned aerial systems curriculum designed to train high school students in modern drone aviation, robotic surveying, and flight navigation. School administrators unveiled the specialized aerospace laboratory before faculty, civic leaders, and local industry partners eager to expand hands-on STEM career tracks.
The specialized STEM program is developed in formal partnership with Fly Point Partners, an established commercial flight instruction and aerial technology consultancy based in Northern California. Through hands-on flight simulator laboratories and supervised field operations, participating students will master aeronautical weather analysis, airspace safety regulations, mission planning, and aerial sensor data collection before sitting for their Federal Aviation Administration Part 107 remote pilot certifications. Licensed commercial pilots will lead flight instruction drills on dedicated campus athletic grounds.
Campus educators structured the curriculum to bridge core physics and mathematics concepts with rapidly expanding regional employment opportunities in agricultural monitoring, utility line inspection, construction mapping, and emergency services reconnaissance. Clayton Valley Charter administrators secured a $120,000 matching vocational grant from the California Department of Education to acquire commercial quadcopters, specialized thermal imaging payloads, and indoor flight cages for safe student practice. The equipment ensures students gain experience operating enterprise-grade aerial platforms utilized across major infrastructure projects.
Concord civic leaders and East Bay technology employers commended the initiative during a campus demonstration, noting that commercial drone operators represent one of the state's fastest-growing technical trades. Students completing the multi-semester sequence will graduate with industry-recognized flight credentials and digital flight portfolios demonstrating precision inspection mapping and video production skills. Local construction firms and surveying consultancies have already pledged internship slots for graduating seniors who earn their commercial licenses.
The high school will host a community open house and flight technology showcase for prospective students and families on Thursday, November 5, at 6:30 PM inside the campus gymnasium at 1101 Alberta Way in Concord. Interested parents and students can review course enrollment guidelines and prerequisite information online at claytonvalley.org or by contacting the counseling department at (925) 682-7474. Academic counselors will provide individual consultations regarding four-year college articulation credits and aerospace career pathways during the evening showcase.
