Recreation directors with the City of Concord Parks & Recreation Department and youth coaches from the Concord AYSO and Diablo Valley Wolves soccer clubs inaugurated two fenced, nighttime-lit synthetic-turf 5v5 mini-pitch futsal courts on Saturday evening at John F. Baldwin Park at 2790 Parkside Drive in Concord. Converting two underutilized cracked asphalt tennis courts beside the Baldwin Park dance studio and dog park, the fast-paced small-sided soccer complex provides central Concord teens and families with free, year-round all-weather turf play regardless of winter grass field closures.

Each 84-foot-by-44-foot mini-pitch features FIFA-certified non-infill short-pile knitted nylon turf over an elastomeric shock pad, bordered by 42-inch high-density polyethylene kickboards and 10-foot vinyl-coated chain-link ball-containment fencing. Welded aluminum futsal goals with recessed net hooks and wheelchair-accessible court gates allow continuous five-on-five games without balls rolling into adjacent Parkside Drive traffic.

Eight 30-foot steel light poles fitted with asymmetrical visor-shielded LED sports luminaires illuminate both courts until 9:30 PM upon pressing an on-court demand button, cutting electrical load by 68 percent compared to legacy metal-halide court lamps. Beside the entrance plaza, a solar-powered Equip-Locker allows neighborhood families to unlock Regulation Size 4 low-bounce futsal balls free of charge using a smartphone QR code.

The $375,000 Baldwin Park mini-pitch conversion was approved by the Concord City Council using Measure V infrastructure funds and a U.S. Soccer Foundation Safe Places to Play grant. Local players, parents, and youth coaches can check free after-school soccer clinic schedules and open pickup hours on the City of Concord Parks & Recreation Portal.
