Parks capital staff with the City of Concord Parks and Recreation Department and local youth action-sports advocates reopened the upgraded Street Skate Plaza at Baldwin Park at 2790 Parkside Circle on Saturday morning, unveiling resurfaced concrete transitions, precision steel coping, and a solar-powered smart storage locker kiosk three blocks from the Downtown Concord BART station. Originally constructed in the early 2000s next to the Baldwin Park basketball courts and dog park, the 14,000-square-foot skate facility had developed weathered surface aggregate and chipped ledge edges from two decades of heavy daily use.

Over a five-week autumn rehabilitation, specialty skatepark finishers diamond-ground and sealed the entire concrete slab to restore a fast, vibration-free roll and replaced worn angle-iron edges with quarter-inch cold-rolled galvanized steel box coping. Crews also poured three new street-style elements requested by Concord riders: a 24-foot manual pad with a Euro-gap, a curved granite-topped hubba ledge, and a low 10-inch beginner flatbar rail.

At the plaza entrance facing Parkside Circle, crews installed a twelve-compartment solar-powered smart locker kiosk where skateboarders, roller-skaters, and BMX riders can secure backpacks, helmets, and school laptops using a free smartphone PIN code while charging phones via internal USB-C ports. Push-button dark-sky LED floodlights on an automatic 9:00 PM timer extend safe evening skate sessions through the shorter autumn and winter daylight hours.

The $265,000 skate plaza upgrade was financed through Concord Measure V infrastructure funds and a Contra Costa County Youth Recreation grant. Riders can view upcoming Saturday beginner skate clinics and helmet safety rules on the City of Concord Parks and Recreation Portal.
