Abdul El-Sayed Defeats Mike Rogers by 7 Points in Michigan U.S. Senate Race
With approximately 97% of the vote counted Wednesday, Sen.-elect Abdul El-Sayed held a 7 percentage point lead over Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan's U.S. Senate contest, becoming the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate, according to KCBS Radio and the Associated Press. Associated Press voting data showed that every county in Michigan shifted toward Democrats compared with 2024, while the AP Voter Poll of more than 4,500 Michigan voters found the electorate roughly split on whether El-Sayed's views were too extreme.
El-Sayed, born in the United States to parents who immigrated from Egypt, rose from a gubernatorial primary defeat 8 years ago to win the 2026 Democratic Senate primary despite being outspent by tens of millions of dollars. Speaking with the AP on Wednesday morning about his 3-year-old and 8-year-old daughters, El-Sayed noted that Rogers had issued a concession statement—unlike 2024, when Rogers phoned then-Rep. Elissa Slotkin on Wednesday morning—and said he would not yet commit to backing Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer for another leadership term.
Aurora Teacher Jared Ploger Wins Illinois Senate District 42 by 26,809 Votes
In northern Illinois, Democrat Jared Ploger won the Illinois Senate District 42 seat with all precincts reporting, receiving 49,191 votes to Republican Edgardo "Eddie" Perez's 22,382 votes—a margin of 26,809 votes—to succeed retiring Sen. Linda Holmes, who has represented parts of Kane, Kendall, Will, and DuPage counties since 2007, Hoodline reported.
Ploger, an Aurora high school social studies teacher, former Oswego School District 308 board member, and president of Valley View Council Local 604 of the American Federation of Teachers, was selected by four county Democratic chairs after Holmes announced her retirement and after Ploger trailed Saba Haider by 27 points in the March primary for Illinois House District 84. Perez, an Aurora resident and U.S. Air Force veteran who served roughly 30 years in law enforcement including the Batavia Police Department, emphasized tax restraint and transparency.
During the campaign, Ploger prioritized K-12 Evidence-Based Funding, affordable housing, and utility costs tied to data centers. A Capitol News Illinois analysis covering 2017 to 2025 showed homeowners in lowest-wealth Illinois school districts pay property tax rates twice as high as those in the wealthiest districts, with 537 districts—63% statewide—funded below 90% of adequacy targets in 2026, while the Illinois Commerce Commission reported in March 2026 that ComEd had 75 large-customer applications in its pipeline.
